After 18 years of operation Le Bons Bay
Backpackers is closing its doors on January 16. We have
loved running the hostel, and meeting over 35,000 guests
over these
years. However, a new career opportunity arose and Heidi
and I have decided to follow
a new challenge, at least for a year or two. Watch this
space! There are plenty of other
lovely Banks peninsula hostels operating-check the BBH
website. Our email address
is gandhbrittenden@xtra.co.nz
if you have any special connection with Le Bons and
want to get in touch with us.

Welcome to our small family run hostel on beautiful
Banks Peninsula, 90 km from Christchurch. Come and enjoy our
rambling gardens, sunny veranda’s, cosy open fires and
heated rooms. Take our morning boat trip to see the dolphins
and penguins, walk through the local forests and hills and
in the evening taste our world famous gourmet dinner for just
$15.
Down the road is the fabulous Le Bons Bay beach,
ideal for swimming in the summer and the surrounding bays
and valleys provide endless opportunities for exploration.
Akaroa, the areas main village, is 14 km from
the hostel and is one of New Zealand's most historic and beautiful
towns, full of colonial houses and cottages, quaint gardens
and boutique shops.
The main part of the hostel is in a restored
farmhouse, built 130 years ago by the original Danish pioneers.
When we purchased the property 25 years ago the house had
lain empty for 60 years and was valued at only $300. After
much restoration the hostel was opened 15 years ago. Since
then the early trickle of visitors has grown to a steady stream
and we have, for the past ten years been rated as one of New
Zealand's best hostels in the BBH annual survey.
We feel passionate about the experience we offer
our guests and our family gains a great deal from all the
wonderful travellers that we get to meet.
